Your skin lives two different lives. By day, it faces UV rays, pollution, makeup and dry office air. By night, it rests and repairs. So it makes sense that your morning and evening routines should not be carbon copies of each other.

Think of it this way: the morning routine is about protection, the evening routine is about cleansing and care. Here is how to build both.

☀ Morning

  1. Gentle cleanser or water rinse
  2. Toner
  3. Serum (optional)
  4. Light moisturiser
  5. Sunscreen

☾ Evening

  1. Oil cleanser
  2. Water-based cleanser
  3. Toner
  4. Essence
  5. Serum or treatment
  6. Moisturiser

The Morning Routine: Light and Protective

Cleanse gently

Your skin does not need a deep cleanse after a night’s sleep. A mild, low-pH cleanser—or just lukewarm water for dry skin—is enough.

Toner

A hydrating toner adds a first layer of moisture. Dry skin? Start with our Korean toners for dry skin.

Serum (optional)

Daytime is a good fit for antioxidant or brightening serums like vitamin C or niacinamide. One is plenty.

Moisturiser

Go lighter in the morning—a gel-cream or lotion sits better under sunscreen and makeup.

Sunscreen

The non-negotiable final step. Apply generously and reapply when you are outdoors. Our picks: the best Korean sunscreens for everyday wear.

If you only have two minutes in the morning: cleanse, moisturise, sunscreen. Done.

The Evening Routine: Cleanse and Care

Double cleanse

Sunscreen and makeup are designed to stay put, so a single wash often is not enough. Start with an oil cleanser, follow with a gentle water-based one. More in Double Cleansing: Do You Really Need Both Steps?.

Toner and essence

Evenings are made for hydrating layers. With no sun, wind or makeup to deal with, lightweight hydration can work undisturbed.

Serum or treatment

This is the time for exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA, PHA) and retinoids, which can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Use one active per evening. Confused by the options? Read Essence vs Serum vs Ampoule.

Moisturiser

A slightly richer cream seals everything in overnight. Dry skin loves ceramide creams—see our Korean moisturisers for dry and sensitive skin.

A Sample Week

Using active ingredients? Spread them out so your skin has time to recover. Here is a simple example:

“Basic” = cleanse, toner, moisturiser. “Hydration night” = toner, essence and moisturiser only.

Key takeaways

  • Morning = protect. Evening = cleanse and care.
  • Apply products from the thinnest to the thickest texture.
  • Keep acids and retinoids for the evening, and always wear sunscreen the next day.
  • Add one new product at a time and patch test first.
